fix(virtual-core): keep only the last rows of a list above the viewport in a shared scroll element - #1372
When lists share a scroll element, a list fully above the viewport keeps rendering a full viewport of rows plus overscan instead of just its last row plus overscan.
The cap from #1351 clamps the offset to listEnd - outerSize, which assumes the list has the scroll element to itself. This change caps at the scroll element's end instead: listEnd + trailing - outerSize, where trailing is how far the element extends past the list.
trailing is read with the element's scroll range on scroll reports and on attach, against the sizer as last drawn (getTotalSize()), since measurements can move the layout ahead of the element. A list that has the element to itself gets trailing 0 and the #1351 behavior. All scroll-trace snapshots remain unchanged.
With no scroll element, there is nothing to read trailing from, so in the core-only repro from the issue the range stays at 51–80 until an element is attached.
Regression coverage in range.test.ts:
81 items with trailing content, offset 2500 past the list end of 2125: 74–80 instead of 51–80.
An element already at 2500 when it attaches: 74–80 with no scroll event, and the adapter is notified (onChange).
Rows measured smaller after the sizer was drawn, then a scroll report before the next draw: still the final viewport.
Added a patch changeset for virtual-core: .changeset/shared-scroller-offscreen-range.md.

Bug Fixes
Corrected visible-row selection when a virtualized list sits above the viewport in a shared scroll area, including when the scroll position is already past the list at attachment.
Improved range calculations when rows shrink while the scroll position is stale, so the list shows its final visible rows.
Preserved valid scrolling through content after a list in a shared scroll area; lists occupying the scroll area alone retain their previous scroll limit.

Walkthrough
The virtualizer measures scrollable space after a list and includes it in the maximum offset used to calculate visible ranges. Tests cover lists above the viewport in shared scroll containers and a list whose rows shrink while the scroll offset remains unchanged.

…rt in a shared scroll element
calculateRange caps the scroll offset at the end of the list (TanStack#1351) so
that a stale offset past the end, after the list shrank and before the
element reports its clamped position, still renders the last viewport of
rows. In a scroll element shared with other content, an offset past one
list's end is where the element is: the list is above the viewport. The
cap then keeps a viewport of rows plus overscan mounted where the old
range kept the last row plus overscan (TanStack#1371).
The cap now applies only while the offset is stale: the element is past
an edge, the offset is not the last one the element reported (a write of
ours not yet read back), or the list has shrunk since that report. The
list end a report is compared with is the one the element has, the sizer
as last rendered, taken to layout coordinates with the report, since
measurements and held corrections move the layout's own end before the
element has the new size. Adapters that redraw on onChange (Vue, Svelte)
render the sizer of the last range without `_willUpdate`, so the end of
the last range counts too, whichever is longer. The scroll-trace snapshot
is unchanged.
1: fixed, with a test. Vue and Svelte redraw without _willUpdate, so the list end recorded with a report now also takes the last range's end into account.
2 and 3: keeping the existing behavior. In those cases the cap from #1351 still applies as it does today.

The issue's core reproduction gives the position up front with
`initialOffset` and has no element to report it, so the range stayed
capped there. The initial offset now counts as a report, against the
list end it is first ranged with, so a list that shrinks afterwards is
still capped.
The marker for "no report yet" was NaN, which never equals itself, so
calculateRange recomputed on every call until the first report. It is
null now.

Thanks @oyobbeb, nice and quick! Checked out 1d06be1, core tests, types and lint pass, and 3 of the new range tests fail on main as they should.
One thing before this goes in, I think CodeRabbit's last point (line 1085) is real. On attach, cleanup() clears _reportedOffset, then _willUpdate writes initialOffset to the element. If the element is already there, no scroll event fires, so the offset stays "stale" until the user scrolls. Quick repro: same setup as your initial offset test, but with getScrollElement: () => el, where el.scrollTop is 2500. getVirtualIndexes() gives 74–80 before _willUpdate() and 51–80 after. Since the issue is about real shared scrollers, could you cover that path too? The current initial offset test only hits the no-element case.
The rest looks fine to me. A shrink of the offscreen list with no scroll event still renders a viewport of rows until the next report, but that's the same as main, so ok to leave.
Also, could you resolve the CodeRabbit threads you've already handled (1101 and 1936)? Then it's easier to see what's still open.
…attaches
Attaching the first scroll element ran cleanup, which dropped the
initial offset's report, and the write of that offset to an element
already there fires no scroll event, so the range stayed capped until
the user scrolled. Only a position an earlier element reported is
dropped now.
The kept offset is dropped too when the element cannot scroll that far:
it clamps the write, and if it already rests at that clamp no scroll
event reports it.
Thanks for the quick check! I've fixed it as follows (ab2f86c0):
On the first attach, cleanup keeps the initial offset's report and only drops a position an earlier element reported. Your repro (el.scrollTop 2500) is now a test, and it gets 74–80 both before and after _willUpdate().
If the list has the element to itself and the initial offset is past its end, the element's max scroll offset is read once on attach and the offset is capped as before (51–80). That has a test too.
Thanks @oyobbeb, the fix works. Before merging though, I'm a bit worried about how much state this adds for what is in the end "render fewer offscreen rows". Four new fields (_renderedListEnd, _rangeListEnd, _reportedOffset, _reportedListEnd), the calculateRange memo now writes instance state, plus the special cases in cleanup and on attach. Each piece makes sense alone, but together it's a lot to keep in sync with the scroll state we just simplified.
One idea, not sure it pans out: instead of tracking when the offset is stale, track how far the scroll element extends past the list's end (read on scroll reports and on attach), and cap at the element's end instead of the list's end, so listEnd + trailing - outerSize. In a shared scroller the cap moves up on its own, and a list that has the element to itself gets the #1351 behavior. I tried a quick version on main and it's not a drop-in. It moves 24 scroll-trace snapshots and trips a measureElement test, probably because it reads measurements during attach. And with no element at all it can't know there's content after the list, so the core-only repro stays capped. So take it as a direction, not a patch.
Also, the shrink test with scrollHeight: 6000 is a shared scroller. There the second list moves up after the shrink, the offset stays valid, and the 30 rows are the same offscreen rows the issue is about. Same as main, so not a regression, but I'm not sure the test should lock that in.
Wdyt? Happy to go with the current version if the simpler one turns out messier.
… list's
Replaces tracking when the offset is stale with the direction from
review: cap at listEnd + trailing - outerSize, where trailing is how far
the scroll element extends past the list. A list that has the element to
itself gets 0 and the cap from TanStack#1351.
trailing is read with the element's scroll range on scroll reports (the
handler already reads it while scrolling) and once on attach, against
the sizer as last drawn: the last getTotalSize() an adapter rendered.
Against the layout's own end it grows by a shrink measured after the
draw and before the next one, and the TanStack#1351 blank comes back
(scroll-trace base/web/5). The scroll-trace snapshot is unchanged.
The core-only repro (no element) is capped again, and the shared
scroller shrink test is gone: that case now keeps rows 34-40, not 30.
I reworked it along your direction, capping at the scroll element's end (92a9a844). The 24 snapshots you saw weren't from reading on attach: when rows are re-measured smaller and a scroll report arrives before the next render, measuring trailing against the layout's list end makes it grow by the shrink, and the #1351 blank comes back (e.g. base/web/5). So trailing is measured against the sizer the element has, the last getTotalSize() an adapter drew. Vue and Svelte draw it through getTotalSize() too, so they need nothing special. The measureElement failure was a test double without clientHeight, which made the scroll range NaN; a NaN trailing now counts as 0.
New state is _trailing and _drawnListEnd; cleanup only resets _trailing. The range change is one line: listEnd + trailing - outerSize.
The scroll handler reuses the elementMax it already reads while scrolling, plus one read on attach. scroll-trace is unchanged and test:pr passes.
As you said, the core-only repro stays capped with this direction, so I dropped that test. I also dropped the scrollHeight: 6000 shrink test as you suggested; that case now keeps rows 34–40 instead of 30.
Thanks @oyobbeb, this is the shape I was hoping for. Checked out 92a9a84: core tests, types and lint pass, scroll-trace unchanged, and the drawn-sizer read is the right call. I had measured trailing against the layout end in my quick try, which is exactly where the 24 moves came from.
One thing to add. On attach, _readTrailing runs after the rect observer has already fired maybeNotify, so the range changes but nothing tells the adapter. Quick repro: same setup as your "already past the list when it attaches" test, but read getVirtualIndexes() before _willUpdate() too, with an onChange spy. The first render has no element yet, so it's 51–80; after _willUpdate() the range is 74–80, but onChange was never called. In React that means a restored initialOffset past the list keeps the 30 rows mounted until the first scroll event. Same as main, so not a regression, but it is the case from the issue. A this.maybeNotify() right after _readTrailing(...) on attach fixes it, and it moves no snapshots.
Also worth a line in the description: with no scroll element there's nothing to read trailing from, so the core-only repro from the issue stays at 51–80 until an element attaches. Fine imho, just so it's written down.
The rect observer has already notified by the time the element is
attached and trailing is read, so a range that changes with it reached
no adapter: an initial offset already past the list kept the first
render's 51-80 mounted until the first scroll event.
As you suggested, I added maybeNotify() right after reading trailing on attach (8e70bf1f).
Your repro is now part of the attach test: the first render gets 51–80, and after _willUpdate() the range becomes 74–80 and onChange is called. scroll-trace is still unchanged.
I've also added a note to the description that the core-only repro stays at 51–80 until an element is attached.
