fix(virtual-core): stop scroll corrections from ping-ponging on a stale layout box - #1374
When a virtualized row is taller or shorter than estimateSize (wrapping cells, sticky group headers), the virtualizer compensates by writing scrollTop from the resize observer. That write is flushed in the same turn, so the next measurement reads the layout box the correction just invalidated and reports the size the row just left. The opposite delta is applied, the new size comes back, and the corrections alternate (correction 3 / correction -3 in the issue recording) until the main thread is stuck. Pausing script execution for a frame lets layout settle, which matches a stale box rather than a real size change. The pinned header jumps by that delta on every turn.
Keep the size that was just committed when a re-entrant notify, or a later observation in the same ResizeObserver broadcast, reports exactly the size the item just left. After that broadcast, read the settled border box on the next frame and apply it once. A direct resizeItem back to an earlier size, outside that echo, still applies immediately.
Test plan
pnpm exec vitest run in packages/virtual-core (478 passed, 1 skipped)
pnpm exec vitest run in packages/react-virtual (11 passed)
eslint and tsc --noEmit for packages/virtual-core
Re-entrant notify that flips the measured size does not loop
The next ResizeObserver delivery of the previous size does not reverse the correction
The following frame adopts a settled size exactly once
A later direct resize back to a previous size still applies
Improved scroll stability when dynamic or sticky items are remeasured during layout updates. Outdated size readings no longer cause repeated scroll adjustments, and settled measurements are applied after layout updates complete. Subsequent size changes continue to update correctly.
…le layout box
A dynamic or sticky row remeasured from the layout box a correction just
invalidated reports the size it left, which applies the opposite delta and
loops (TanStack#1252). Keep the first size through that echo and confirm the settled
box on the next frame.

The virtualizer now defers measurements that match a prior item size during correction or ResizeObserver delivery. It later rereads the live size and applies a confirmed measurement. Regression tests cover stale observations and subsequent settled measurements.

Summary
Track correction and observer activity packages/virtual-core/src/index.ts
The virtualizer tracks correction depth and ResizeObserver delivery while it processes measurement notifications and follow-up work.
Defer and confirm echoed measurements packages/virtual-core/src/index.ts
During correction or observer delivery, a measurement that matches the prior size is deferred. A later live-size read can update the measurement. Cleanup invalidates pending confirmations.
Cover stale and settled measurements packages/virtual-core/tests/adjustment.test.ts, .changeset/sticky-scroll-correction.md
Regression tests cover synchronous notifications, stale measurements in one observer broadcast, deferred adoption of the settled size, and a direct resize to a prior size. The changeset records a patch for @tanstack/virtual-core.

The fix addresses stale-size feedback, but narrow cases can still cause jitter, incorrect layout, or failed custom measurements. Mergeability is low-risk with explicit owner acceptance of these remaining limitations.

Keep pending echo guards separate from later timer batches.
If another item changes while an echo confirmation is pending, its timer can clear the first item’s guard. A delayed previous-size observation can then reverse the correction and cause visible jitter. Preserve each pending guard until its confirmation.

Respect the smooth-scroll measurement policy during echo confirmation.
If a distant smooth scroll starts before confirmation, a connected item outside the target buffer can still be measured. Its changed size can move the index target and cause another scroll write. Defer confirmation until measurement is permitted without losing the pending confirmation.

Confirm zero-sized items as zero.
If an item returns from 53 to 0 while its echo guard is active, confirmation passes no entry to the default measureElement and reads the cached 53. The item can retain incorrect positions and total size until another measurement repairs it. Preserve zero as a valid live measurement.

Preserve re-entrant manual size updates.
If onChange synchronously changes a manually sized item from 80 back to 50, the echo guard discards the update. Without a measured node, confirmation cannot restore it, so layout and scroll correction remain based on 80. Distinguish manual updates from DOM measurement echoes.

Fixes the scroll-correction loop in #1252.
When a virtualized row is taller or shorter than
estimateSize(wrapping cells, sticky group headers), the virtualizer compensates by writingscrollTopfrom the resize observer. That write is flushed in the same turn, so the next measurement reads the layout box the correction just invalidated and reports the size the row just left. The opposite delta is applied, the new size comes back, and the corrections alternate (correction 3/correction -3in the issue recording) until the main thread is stuck. Pausing script execution for a frame lets layout settle, which matches a stale box rather than a real size change. The pinned header jumps by that delta on every turn.Keep the size that was just committed when a re-entrant notify, or a later observation in the same ResizeObserver broadcast, reports exactly the size the item just left. After that broadcast, read the settled border box on the next frame and apply it once. A direct
resizeItemback to an earlier size, outside that echo, still applies immediately.Test plan
