C-generating back end: scoped enumerations with a signed underlying type [GH #485] - #456
The C-generating back end emitted a scoped enumeration as a C enum type. The C compiler could then pick an unsigned type for it, so a negative value of a scoped enumeration with a signed underlying type became a large positive value.
il_to_str.c now uses the underlying integer type for scoped enumerations, as it already did for an enumeration with an explicit enum-base.
In check_enum_type_for_bit_field, every enumeration with a fixed underlying type, scoped or with an explicit enum-base, now takes its signedness from that type up front, with bool treated as unsigned. That signedness is used to count the bits needed, and the override at the end of the function is gone. As a result, a bit field of a bool-based enumeration is unsigned, so static_cast<int>(f.b) gives 1 instead of -1. The "bit field cannot contain all values" warning is also issued for both kinds of fixed underlying type.
regressions/gh-485 checks negative values, an empty scoped enumeration, and signed, unsigned and bool enumeration bit fields at run time. Its static_asserts are under #ifdef __GNUC__, so the --strict case compiles. regressions/gh-485-bit-field-size covers the warning for both kinds of enumeration. Clang's warn-msvc-enum-bitfield gets one new warning, for enum E : signed { E1, E2 } in a 1-bit field, which can't hold E2.
Tested with the full test suites for edg_x86_64 and edg_x86_64_cp, compared with a run of main, and with the new and changed tests for edg_x86_32 and edg_x86_32_cp.
The C-generating backend now uses the underlying integer type for scoped enums. Scoped-enum bit fields retain signedness from their fixed underlying type, with bool treated as unsigned. A C++20 regression test covers these cases.

Summary
Scoped-enum type output src/il_to_str.c
The C-generating backend uses the underlying integer type for scoped enums instead of emitting enum references.
Fixed bit-field signedness and regression coverage src/class_decl.c, tests/tests/regressions/edg-28934.sft.cpp, src/pending_changes/edg-28934-scoped-enum-signedness.txt
Scoped-enum bit fields retain signedness from the fixed underlying type, with bool treated as unsigned. The regression test checks enum conversions and bit-field values. The pending-change note describes both updates.
Scoped-enum bit fields keep signedness from their fixed underlying type, but a bool-based scoped enum bit field can still come out signed on some targets and read back as -1. The new regression test is also likely to fail to compile in its strict-mode case. Fix both before merging; the build and regression runs are still pending.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 79765
The change corrects scoped-enum representation without adding access paths or privileges. Remaining uncertainty concerns compatibility of generated code and compiler validation that has not yet been completed.

Security Blast Radius
inferred — The evidenced affected scope is scoped-enum translation and bit-field interpretation in existing compilation flows. Any security consequence would depend on downstream use of the resulting values or representation; no concrete downstream attack path or expanded authority was established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The changed production blocks adjust type predicates and signedness selection inside existing compiler functions. They introduce no public declaration, credential handling, authorization bypass, or authority-bearing operation.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the C-generating back end and scoped enumerations with a signed underlying type, with a GH #485 reference. The raw summary and objectives describe a change that makes the C-generating back end emit scoped enums with their fixed underlying integer type and preserve that signedness in bit-fields. The title therefore matches the main change. The objectives cite PR #456 and the summary cites GH #456 in the pending-change note, but the title cites GH #485. This mismatch in issue number is a discrepancy, not a title-content failure. The title is 82 characters, which is longer than ideal but still a single readable sentence.

Preserve the unsigned result for bool-based scoped enums.
This assignment overwrites the result from Line 20669. On targets where the bool representation uses signed char, a one-bit field for enum class B : bool is therefore emitted as signed. Its stored true value can read back as -1, rather than 1. Skip this reassignment for scoped enums. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Review comment at @src/class_decl.c at line 20755:
Update the use_signed assignment from int_type_is_signed(bit_field_type) so it
does not overwrite the previously determined result for scoped enums. Preserve
the unsigned result for bool-based scoped enums, while retaining the existing
reassignment for non-scoped enums.
If a signed one-bit field reads back as -1, the conversion to bool still produces true. This check would accept that result. Compare static_cast<int>(f.b) with 1 instead.

Review comment at @tests/tests/regressions/edg-28934.sft.cpp at line 19:
Update the assertion on f.b to compare static_cast<int>(f.b) with 1 instead of
converting it to bool, so the test verifies the field’s exact numeric value.

Your changes fix the reproducer from discussion #296 in strict, GNU, and Clang modes. A few things need attention before this can go in, though:
As CodeRabbit noted, the --strict case of the new test does not compile: neither __is_same nor __underlying_type is available in strict mode ("identifier "__is_same" is undefined"). Since the runtime checks already cover the behavior, the simplest fix is to guard the two static_asserts with #ifdef __GNUC__ (or drop them). The test also needs its recordings (edg-docker-test -W); see e.g. https://acknowledg.edgcpp.org/ -- this is why CI currently fails.
The bool handling in check_enum_type_for_bit_field has no effect: enum_has_bool_underlying_type is only TRUE for an enum with an explicit base, and for those the existing code at the end of the function (use_signed = int_type_is_signed(bit_field_type)) overrides use_signed anyway. So Boolean b : 1 is still emitted as signed char b: 1, and after f.b = Boolean::one, static_cast<int>(f.b) yields -1 instead of 1 (that was already the case before this PR). The test does not catch this because it checks static_cast<bool>(f.b); checking static_cast<int>(f.b) == 1 would.
Related: An unscoped enum with an explicit base has a fixed underlying type too, but it still goes through the value-based computation, and only the final signedness is overridden. As a result, with your changes, enum class F { f3 = 3 }; struct S { F f : 2; }; gets the "bit field cannot contain all values" warning, but enum E : int { e3 = 3 }; struct T { E e : 2; }; does not. I think it would be cleaner to treat every enum with a fixed underlying type (has_explicit_enum_base || is_scoped_enum) the same way: take the signedness from the underlying type up front (with bool as unsigned), use it for the bit count, and drop the override at the end. That would also fix the bool case above.
In il_to_str.c, the new comment line says "with a fixed int underlying type", but every scoped enum has a fixed underlying type, which isn't necessarily int (the explicit-base case is covered by the line above). Maybe "don't generate scoped enums (their underlying type is fixed)".
Housekeeping: commit messages, the Changes entry, and the test name should refer to a GitHub issue ([GH #<issue>], gh-<issue>.sft.cpp, src/pending_changes/gh-<issue>-....txt) rather than to the old EDG problem-report number or to this PR's number. I opened issue #485 from your discussion entry to enable that. Please also fold the "Document ..." commit into the fix. For the Changes entry, please follow the usual form: a title naming the affected area (e.g., "C-generating back end: scoped enumerations with a signed underlying type"), a description of what went wrong before, and a short example (the reproducer from the discussion would do, but I'd change ClassE to just E).
…ype [GH edgcpp#485]
The C-generating back end emitted a scoped enumeration as a C enum type,
which the C compiler could make unsigned, so a negative value of a scoped
enumeration with a signed underlying type was converted to a large
positive value. Use the underlying integer type instead, as is already
done for an enumeration with an explicit enum-base.
For a bit field of an enumeration type with a fixed underlying type (a
scoped enumeration, or one with an explicit enum-base), take the signedness
from the underlying type up front, treating bool as unsigned, and use it
to compute the number of bits needed. This replaces the override of the
signedness at the end of check_enum_type_for_bit_field, so a bool-based
enumeration bit field is now unsigned, and the "bit field cannot contain
all values" warning is issued consistently for both kinds of fixed
underlying type.

Preserve scoped enum underlying signedness
C-generating back end: scoped enumerations with a signed underlying type [GH #485]
Nov 8, 2026
Thanks for the detailed review. All five points are addressed in the force-pushed commit:
The static_asserts are under #ifdef __GNUC__, and the tests are recorded. The test now checks static_cast<int>(f.b) == 1, which fails on main.
and 3. Every enum with a fixed underlying type (has_explicit_enum_base || integer_type_is_scoped_enum(...)) now takes its signedness from the underlying type up front, with bool as unsigned. That signedness is used for the bit count, and the override at the end is gone. regressions/gh-485-bit-field-size checks that both enum class F { f3 = 3 } and enum E : int { e3 = 3 } in a 2-bit field get the warning. One imported test changes: Clang's warn-msvc-enum-bitfield now warns for enum E : signed { E1, E2 } in a 1-bit field, which can't hold E2.
The comment now reads "don't generate scoped enums (their underlying type is fixed)".
