Lifetime of temporaries in aggregate initialization [EDGcpfe/29057] - #458
A temporary created in the initializer of an element of an aggregate was destroyed at the end of that element's initialization. It should live until the initialization of the whole aggregate is complete.
decl_inits.c and expr.c now treat the complete braced initialization of an aggregate as one full-expression. This includes nested aggregate initializers and an initializer whose parsing was suspended and resumed. lower_init.c no longer repeats partial cleanups that an inner lifetime already handles.
regressions/edg-29057 covers local aggregates, return values, arrays and nested aggregates. regressions/edg-29057-eh covers members with nontrivial destructors when an exception is thrown during the initialization and after it. gnu/cpp/cpp0x/initlist122, gnu/cpp/init/aggr7-eh and gnu/cpp/init/array12 now pass, and Clang's source_location has fewer errors.
cwg/cwg3100 changes from one wrong destruction order to another. On main it prints ~A ~A ~BTemp ~DTemp ~BTemp, and now ~DTemp ~A ~A ~BTemp ~BTemp. The expected order is ~A ~A ~DTemp ~BTemp ~BTemp. The remaining difference comes from the order in which static destructors are registered, an existing problem tracked as EDGcpfe/28549.
Tested with the full test suites for edg_x86_64 and edg_x86_64_cp, compared with a run of main, and with the new and changed tests for edg_x86_32 and edg_x86_32_cp.
The Changes entry uses this PR's number until there is an issue for it.
The change tracks full-expression state during eligible braced aggregate initialization and adjusts cleanup handling for overlapping inner-lifetime temporaries. It adds a regression test for temporary lifetimes across several aggregate initialization forms.
Eligible braced aggregate initializers now use an expression-stack context and wrap up the initializer before that context is popped. Initializer continuation processing restores the saved full-expression state.
Dynamic initialization skips an aggregate cleanup-state adjustment for aggregates and lambdas that overlap inner-lifetime temporaries. The regression test checks temporary counts for direct, returned, array, and nested aggregate initialization. The change note documents the lifetime rule.
No merge-blocking defect was found. Run the pending EDG checks; exception-cleanup coverage is a useful follow-up.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 431fe
The change stays within existing compiler processing and introduces no identified trust or privilege boundary. Source inspection supports coordinated lifetime finalization and cleanup ownership, but generated cleanup behavior under exceptions and repeated parsing suspension remains unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The security-relevant exposure is altered temporary-destruction timing in programs compiled through the affected aggregate-initialization paths. Source input already reaches these compiler paths; the inspected change does not introduce another service, identity transition, or privileged operation.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Static cleanup ownership is coherent: partial-member exception cleanup remains available before aggregate completion, while the completed aggregate and inner-lifetime cleanup paths handle the post-completion state. This counters an inferred missed-or-duplicated-destruction concern, but does not establish executed failure-path correctness.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "Lifetime of temporaries in aggregate initialization [EDGcpfe/29057]" matches the main change. The raw summary and PR objectives describe fixing how temporaries created during aggregate initialization (including nested aggregates, arrays, and return-value initialization) stay alive until the complete initialization ends. The bracketed tracker reference is noise but does not make the title misleading, so the title passes.

Cover exception cleanup for a destructible aggregate.
A and Pair have trivial destructors, so this test does not exercise the changed cleanup branch in src/lower_init.c at Line 11026. Add a case with destructible aggregate members and a throwing initializer or temporary destructor. Check that each constructed object is destroyed exactly once.

Extend the regression case using A and Pair with a destructible aggregate member
and an initializer or temporary destructor that throws. Verify that every object
constructed before the exception is destroyed exactly once, exercising the
aggregate cleanup path.

because of this it probably makes sense to add test for aggregate members with non-trivial destructors and member evaluations that throws exception mid-way through initialization

Added regressions/edg-29057-eh. It has members with nontrivial destructors, a nested aggregate, and exceptions thrown both during the initialization and after it, and it counts the constructions and destructions in each case. It passes in both x86_64 configurations.
A temporary created in the initializer of an element of an aggregate was
destroyed at the end of that element's initialization, instead of when
the initialization of the whole aggregate is complete. Treat the
complete braced initialization of an aggregate as one full-expression,
including nested aggregate initializers and initializers resumed after
parsing was suspended.
Add regression tests, including members with nontrivial destructors and
exceptions thrown during and after the initialization.
gnu/cpp/cpp0x/initlist122, gnu/cpp/init/aggr7-eh and
gnu/cpp/init/array12 now pass.
